TRAFFIC SCHOOLS

In the state of Virginia, traffic schools are often referred to as ‘Driver Improvement Clinics’. There are three reasons why people enroll in the Driver Improvement Clinics:

• After a traffic violation where demerit points were awarded, the court will orders the driver to take a course at a traffic/driving school to improve their safe-driving skills.
• To receive insurance discounts.
• To receive safe driving points.

This program is designed to help you to learn defensive driving techniques that will make you a safer driver. The DIC is an eight hour course and there are various locations and online clinics offered in Virginia. If the clinic has been court-ordered, please ensure that the court will accept a certificate of completion from an online course, before enrolling in a computer based DIC.

1. Locate the Department of Motor Vehicles nearest you, as you will have to apply for the ID card in person. You cannot apply online.
2. Complete the Driver License Identification Card form and Voter Registration Form.
3. Bring proper identification. You will be asked to present two pieces of primary identification and one piece of secondary identification.
4. You must also provide proof of your social security number (SSN). If you have never been issued a SSN, you may be required to obtain one, or else sign a Statement of Not Eligible for Social Security Number form.
5. Provide proof of Virginia residence.
6. Pay the ID card application fee, currently $10.00, by cash, money order, check or credit card.
7. You must also surrender any valid driver license or instruction permit issued by the state of Virginia or any other jurisdiction.

Instructions for replacing a lost, stolen or mutilated Virginia driver’s license or identification card:

You can choose to obtain a replacement driver’s license (but not an identification card) online, using a PIN issued by the DMV. However, certain conditions can restrict you from obtaining a duplicate online. If the current photo on your license needs to be replaced, visit one of the DMV centers near you.

To apply in person, follow the instructions below:

1. Locate the Virginia DMV office nearest you. Be sure to note the days and hours of operation.
2. Download, complete and bring the Driver’s License and Identification Card Application. You can also obtain the form at the DMV office.
3. Bring proper identification. The State of Virginia requires that you present two pieces of primary ID. Persons under the age of 19 are only required to present one primary ID.
4. Bring proof of legal presence in the US, unless previously provided by you and if it has not expired.
5. Bring the correct fee. Normally, there is a $10 fee for replacing a lost, stolen, or mutilated license. Cash, checks, e-checks, money orders, check cards and major credit cards are accepted. Please contact your local DMV office to confirm the fee before applying in person, since fees may vary.
